Did you know that Saturday, November 30, 2013 is Small Business Saturday? We love our local businesses here in Ellijay and know that you will, too. So, while we definitely encourage you to visit any number of them on Saturday the 30th, we also want to emphasize how great our shops are for your holiday shopping. So, why should you head to downtown Ellijay and visit the boutique shops and antique stores in lieu of going to a mega-retailer like Wal-Mart? Well, there are a few reasons that we would like to point out.
One-of-a-kind gifts – Yes, you can go Wal-Mart and find a variety of gift ideas for those on your list, but they are the same gifts that thousands of people all over the country are buying for the people on their list. When you visit the stores in downtown Ellijay, you are going to find unique items that you can’t find anywhere else, making those gifts truly special. Yet, you are not limiting yourself on the choices – whether looking for jewelry, candles, artwork, candy, books, clothes or anything, you can find a store that sells it in Ellijay.
Holiday sales – Just because you shop in the boutique stores in Ellijay does not mean you will be spending a significant amount of money. These stores will be having Black Friday sales as well as holiday sales throughout December, just like the mega retailers, and you should take advantage of them.
Support local – This concept can be applied to any city, not just Ellijay. Small businesses are the foundation of our economy, and it is important for them to succeed. They employ local residents and are an integral part of the community. You can’t tell me that it doesn’t feel great to support a business that not only helps support the city, but is actually a part of the community.
If you are spending Thanksgiving in one of our North Georgia Mountain cabin rentals, then doing your holiday shopping in Ellijay is a no-brainer. Even better, after spending Black Friday shopping and dining in downtown Ellijay, you can stay around the square for Light Up Ellijay, which commences at 5:00 p.m.
Ellijay, with the beautiful mountain views, boutique shops and decorations around every corner, becomes a magical place during the holiday season, and it all begins with the annual Light Up Ellijay. The whole day is filled with festive activities all leading up to the grand finale – the lighting of the Christmas tree in downtown Ellijay.
This year’s event is on Friday, November 29th, which is incredibly convenient since you will probably already be in downtown Ellijay taking advantage of all of the Black Friday shopping specials. At 5:00 the festivities begin with music, caroling and dancing. The parade follows a 6:00 with the lighting of the tree approximately 30 minutes later. The parade should really be a sight to see as this year’s theme is Christmas in Elli-Whoville, meaning many parade attendants will have crazy Whoville hair do’s and clothes (remember Whoville is the setting of Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas).
The theme couldn’t be a better fit for our tree lighting event because the community really comes together to make it unforgettable, just like in the story. For example, high school art students worked hard to make special sets for your pictures with Santa or the Grinch. Also, the high school chorus will be performing. And, all of the store’s windows will be creatively festive as they are competing for the highly coveted “Best Window Award.”
There really isn’t a better way to start the holiday season. So, if you are spending Thanksgiving in one of our Ellijay cabin rentals, do not miss Light Up Ellijay – it will help make your holiday unforgettable.

From picturesque mountain views to a fully equipped kitchen, our North Georgia cabins are complete with everything that you need in order to enjoy a peaceful escape from the stressors of your daily life. One of the features that really adds to the cabin ambiance are the gas log fireplaces, and it occurred to us that not everyone may be familiar with this particular type of fireplace and how it is different from a wood burning fireplace.
A gas log fireplace is built to look like a wood burning fireplace, but to be a little easier to use. They have special ceramic logs that are made specifically for gas log fireplaces and require less care. All you have to do is flip a switch to light the fire, and then turn that switch off when you are done, and that is all.
It’s definitely a low maintenance way to enjoy a fire, and does not require the hands-on attention of a wood burning fireplace. For example, when the flame gets a little low on a wood burning fireplace, you can adjust the logs and redistribute the air to get a bigger fire. Well, the flame on a gas log fireplace does not fluctuate; it remains the same intensity the entire time the fireplace is turned on. So, the logs never need to be adjusted. In fact, the logs shouldn’t be adjusted because then the heat is no longer evenly distributed and it can cause irreversible damage to the fireplace.
There is one other big difference between wood burning and gas log fireplaces that we should point out. The gas log fireplaces were designed to burn only gas and so the flame is a lower temperature than wood burning fireplaces. For this reason, nothing else should be burned in these fireplaces because they will increase the temperature of the flame, damaging the internal controls of the fireplace. Not to mention, burning other materials in the fireplace is a fire hazard.
We are big fans of gas log fireplaces as they provide the same comfort of a wood burning fireplace without the extra hassle. Especially with the weather getting colder, they add so much enjoyment to your time spent at our North Georgia cabin rentals. There is hardly a better way to end a day spent hiking the Appalachian Trail than by relaxing in a hot tub and then curling up in front of a sparkling fire. Remember that we have some amazing November discounts on our rental cabins, so call us for reservations 706-229-4694.
If you are looking to take advantage of the beautiful North Georgia Fall foliage, then now is the time to come visit. This past weekend, the last weekend in October, the mountains were on fire with reds, yellows and oranges, leaving us to believe we are at the peak of the season. That being said, the leaves will not stay on the trees much longer, so you need to make plans to see them now, and what better way than renting a cabin in the North Georgia mountains and immersing yourself in the beautiful scenery for a few days.
The weather has been perfect for spending the days hiking the Appalachian Trail or exploring the local orchards and shops. It may get a little cold when the sun goes down, but that is the perfect time to relax in a hot tub. And, don’t worry about missing the big game because our cabins are equipped with HD, flat screen televisions. Remember that we have many pet-friendly cabins for rent, so you do not have to worry about finding care for your dogs while you are gone.
As if you needed more incentive, we are offering big discounts on cabin rentals in November. For any reservation arriving and departing between November 1 and 22, you will receive 20% or 50% off! It’s 20% off for weekend reservations (Friday to Sunday) and 50% off weekday reservations (Monday to Thursday). So, take advantage of our November discounts and spend a week or weekend relaxing in the North Georgia mountains. Call 706-229-4692 and mention this ad to receive your exclusive discount.
This post is all about informing guests about the little unpleasantries that might come with renting a cabin in North Georgia. Let me start by saying that our cabins are completely secluded in the woods, which is one of the best things about them. They are quiet and surrounded by exquisite natural beauty, whether it be the mountains or the river. It’s so wonderful to spend time on the porch taking in the natural beauty of the area and leaving the stressors and worries of your daily life behind you at home. However, being completely encompassed by nature does have one little drawback – critters.
We do pest control for every single one of our cabins, but it is still rather common to find the occasional spider or scorpion hanging out in the basement. The basements are underground with two or three sides having absolutely no windows, making it an extremely appealing home for these uninvited guests. So, if you happen to be staying in one of our beautiful North Georgia cabins, do not be alarmed to find a scorpion in the basement. There are two different kinds of scorpions found in North Georgia – the Southern Devil (this one only lives in Georgia) and the striped scorpion (the most common species in the country). Neither of these two scorpions are poisonous, in fact, their stings rarely require any medical intervention at all. However, the most important thing to remember is that they will not hurt you if you don’t bother them. So, the best advice we can give is to continue with your weekend getaway as if they do not exist, but not to be alarmed that they do.
